'I'll stand': Jeff Horn responds to Anthony Mundine's controversial anthem plan

Boxer Jeff Horn has responded to Anthony Mundine’s controversial plan to sit during the national anthem, saying he will stand as he usually does prior to their bout at Suncorp Stadium.

The 30-year-old said whilst he hopes Mundine will not go ahead with his plan to silently protest the Australian national anthem, he won’t force his opponent to do anything he doesn’t want to do.

Mundine admitted he would sit down if the ‘white supremacist song’ was played as Horn reaffirmed his position on the issue.

“I’m very proud of the anthem and I’ll stand for it and do what I normally do, I just hope he will do the same thing,” Horn told Sporting News.

“I won't do anything to Mundine to make him do anything he doesn’t want to do.”

Horn’s trainer Glenn Rushton said he believes both Mundine and Horn should stand for the anthem and not be dragged into a political debate.

“Jeff’s come out and said if he wanted to play a song that’s dear to him and important to him and his culture, Jeff would proudly stand for that,” he told Sporting News.

“I think Mundine should offer Jeff the same in return and stand proudly for the national anthem, and stand together as one under that banner.

“And again, we have no problems with Anthony wanting to pay tribute to his culture, and we would certainly support any song he wanted to play there on the night, and we only ask for the same in return.”

The pair will clash at the River City Rumble at Suncorp Stadium Friday 30 November.
