Injuries could put Hayne in spotlight

Jarryd Hayne is set for even more action with the San Francisco 49ers against the Pittsburgh Steelers as a result of injuries to two of his teammates.

The 49ers star running back Reggie Bush has been ruled out of the trip to Pittsburgh because of the calf injury he suffered in the win over the Minnesota Vikings.

Hayne, who recovered to have a solid debut after fumbling his first touch, is likely to once again be the back-up running back after Carlos Hyde.

The Australia will share carries with debutant Mike Davis and Hyde, who starred in the 20-3 victory over the Vikings with two touchdowns and 186 rushing yards.

Not only has Bush been ruled out but Hayne’s punt returning rival Bruce Ellington is also in doubt for Monday’s clash with an ankle issue.

“I don’t know if he’s going to show up on anything, but he’s got an ankle that’s been bugging him,” Tomsula said.

Hayne is likely to share the punt returning duties against the Steelers with Ellington and DeAndrew White.

If he is used as a punt returner, Hayne will be catching the kicks of fellow Australian and Steelers punter Jordan Berry.
