San Francisco 49er Jarryd Hayne wished he "could've done better" as the NFL franchise sunk to a demoralising 43-18 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Hayne was a mere spectator for the 49ers at Heinz Field in Pittsburgh this morning (AEST), recording just three rushing yards (2.7m) and returning one punt for seven yards (6.4m).
As the 49ers chased the game in the second half, switching from their running game for a more of a long pass approach, the 27-year-old former NRL star was kept on the sidelines.
Hayne told reporters the loss provided a valuable lesson for both him and the team but admitted he wanted to contribute more to turning the game around.
"That's football," Hayne said postgame.
"We faced a great Steelers defence today.
"For me, I wish I could’ve done better. And I’m sure it’s same for the team
"Like I keep saying, every week I just want to keep getting better and better and learn."
Hayne and the 49ers will have the chance to avenge the defeat when they continue their two-game road trip against the Arizona Cardinals on Monday (AEST).
