Randwick gets synthetic training track

A new synthetic circuit at Randwick will allow horses to train at the Sydney track year round, no matter the weather.

The Australian Turf Club has started work to replace the existing dirt track with a 13.5 metre wide Polytrack surface, 2000m in circumference, to be completed by the end of the year.

Polytrack is made from a mixture of sand, rubber and wax with a vertical drainage system, believed to create a uniform and drier racing surface.

ATC's general manager of racing James Heddo said the synthetic track would particularly benefit trainers during wetter periods.

"Once complete at Royal Randwick, all four of Sydney's racecourses ... will have an all-weather synthetic surface for training and gallops," he said.

A separate sand track upgrade is due to begin early 2019.
