Three-time Group 1 winner Riff Rocket euthanised on eve of spring racing carnival
In heartbreaking news on the eve of the spring racing carnival, three-time Group 1 winner Riff Rocket has been euthanised.
It follows the horse undergoing emergency surgery last week, after suffering a colic attack.
The four-year-old suffered abdominal pains, but according to a statement from trainer Chris Waller, everything looked promising until sudden complications arose.

"It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Riff Rocket following complications arising from his colic surgery," Waller said in a statement on Tuesday.
"This is an incredibly difficult time for everyone involved, as we mourn the loss of not just a magnificent racehorse but also an extraordinary animal who made an indelible impact on Australian racing."

Weller lauded the horse and sent his condolences to owners, the Kepitis family, who also owned champion racehorse Winx.
Riff Rocket won seven of his 12 starts, amassing more than $3.5 million in prizemoney.
"Riff Rocket's career as a three-year-old was nothing short of remarkable," Waller said.

"This is a heartbreaking loss not only for the Kepitis family, but also for the entire team at Chris Waller Racing.
"Riff Rocket will forever hold a special place in our hearts, remembered for the fighting spirit he displayed both on the racetrack and in his final days.

"Our thoughts go out to all those who had the privilege of working with and supporting Riff Rocket throughout his career. He will be deeply missed, but his legacy will continue to inspire us all."
Riff Rocket's time on the big stage was nothing short of incredibly, as he went on to earn over $3.5 million in prize money.
In 2023, he won the Victoria Derby and took home a $600,000 cheque.
Riff Rocket was a lock for the upcoming spring racing carnival in Melbourne, with high expectations that he would perform on the biggest stage yet again.
