Melbourne Cup 2017: Gallante finishes in last place

While everyone watched anxiously to see who wins the Melbourne Cup, just as many are curious to know which horse finished last. 

Gallante was the horse to take out the honour in the 2017 Melbourne Cup delighting those who drew him in their office sweep as Joseph O'Brien-trained Rekindling claimed a historic victory.

The seven-year-old bay gelding Gallante drew the dreaded barrier 18 which has never delivered a winner at the Melbourne Cup, so from the outset the Robert Hickmott-trained horse was at a disadvantage.

Unfancied horses Bondi Beach and Ventura Storm were second and third-last in the field according to the official finishing order, while topweight Hartnell and fellow contender Humidor came in 20th and 19th place.

Initially it was thought that US Army Ranger had pulled up, with reports stating that was going to be named as the last-placed finisher on the official order.

However, it was revealed that Gallante had pulled up before the finish line, and while he never completed the run that will be the horse that goes down on the official list as last place.

Interestingly, Lloyd Williams owns both last-placed Gallante and first-placed Rekindling, so while he may be pleased that he got his sixth Melbourne Cup win, he mightn't be so happy with his other stayer's effort.
