Melbourne Cup winning jockey Michelle Payne has been stood down after returning a positive result to a drug test.

Payne will front a Racing Victoria steward’s inquiry on Thursday after having returned a positive urine sample on June 11.

A sample provided by Payne at the Swan Hill Cup meeting was found to contain the presence of Phentermine, an appetite suppressant that is on the industry’s banned substances list.

Payne made racing history in 2015 when she became the first female jockey to win the Melbourne Cup.

The Victorian jockey became one of the highest-profiled figures in Australian sport after riding Prince of Penzance to a shock win in the race that stops a nation.

Payne’s hearing will start at 11am at Flemington.
