It's better late than never for Impending

His breeding suggests Impending should be a horse to be reckoned with and his trainer agrees.

John O'Shea has had to take a measured approach with the colt who made a belated debut at Rosehill on Saturday.

The two-year-old by champion Lonhro out of dual Group One winner Mnemosyne has been nursed along because of a few issues but displayed the talent O'Shea knew he had with a stylish win.

"He's got prominent sesamoids which could cause suspensory problems," O'Shea said.

"But it helps that he is a light-framed horse and not at all heavy.

"He's a real horse."

Punters warmed to the Godolphin charge, with Impending backed from $5 to $3.80 favouritism while the Gai Waterhouse-trained Sylpheed drifted from $4.20 to $4.40.

Sylpheed assumed the lead early with Eckstein ($12) right behind and Impending travelling well in fourth place to the turn.

Once he straightened up, Impending took control and went on to beat Eckstein by 2-1/2 lengths with Sylpheed another neck third.

"We will assess him over the next week or so and decide whether he goes to the paddock or perhaps has another run," O'Shea said.

"Maybe a float trip to Brisbane could be on the cards.

"But whatever happens we will look after him and be kind to him.

"I think he will be a serious racehorse in the spring. He might just be a bit special."

Stable jockey James McDonald agreed.

"I've never sat on him before today," he said.

"He's a bloody lovely horse."
