Forster sets Derby goal for Cylinder Beach

Cylinder Beach has set himself up for a Classic campaign in the autumn with a dominant Melbourne Cup day victory at Doomben.

With Robbie Fradd in the saddle, the three-year-old shed his maiden status in stylish fashion when he demolished his rivals by seven lengths on Tuesday.

Cylinder Beach was sent out a $1.14 favourite in the maiden Plate on the strength of his Brisbane winter carnival form which included a third in the Group Two BRC Sires' Produce Stakes and fourth in the Group One J J Atkins.

He finished just over two lengths behind subsequent Caulfield Guineas winner Press Statement in the J J Atkins after having to track wide on the corner.

Trainer Desleigh Forster will now send Cylinder Beach for a break before bringing him back for a campaign directed towards the Australian Derby at Randwick and the Queensland Derby at Eagle Farm.

"There is a case to say he should have finished pretty close to Press Statement in the Atkins and it made him a good thing today," Forster said.

"But they have to win and he did it in style after Robbie (Fradd) used his good barrier to go forward.

"He can have a couple of weeks on the water walker at the spelling farm and then come back for the autumn and winter. You will see a very good stayer then."

Forster's other smart three-year-olds, Too Good To Refuse and I'm Belucci, will be back in her stable on Sunday to prepare for their respective autumn campaigns.
