Craig Williams takes premiership lead

Craig Williams has taken the lead in the Melbourne jockeys' premiership with a winning double at Moonee Valley.

Williams was five behind Dwayne Dunn heading into last Saturday's Flemington meeting but has had a big couple of days to hit the front by one with only five meetings remaining this season.

After five wins to Dunn's one at Flemington, Williams added two without response at Moonee Valley on Wednesday.

Williams got on the board at Moonee Valley when he rode the Chris Waller-trained Magicus, the $2.50 favourite, to a one length win in the Telstra Phonewords Handicap (1200m).

He made it a race-to-race double when the Tony McEvoy-trained Turbo Street took out the Ranvet Handicap (1600m).

Williams has won four Melbourne premierships, the most recent in 2008/09 when he finished in a tie with Damien Oliver.

Dunn is after his first Melbourne premiership.

Dunn's son Dylan extended his lead to four over Michael Dee in the Melbourne apprentices' premiership with his win aboard Canberra-based filly Yasnat at the Moonee Valley meeting.
