Catastrophic injury claims reigning Cox Plate champion Sir Dragonet
Defending Cox Plate champion Sir Dragonet has sadly died following a tragic track accident this morning.
The Irish import and dual Group 1 winner, trained by Ciaron Maher and David Eustace, broke down in a track gallop at Moonee Valley, suffering a catastrophic injury and could not be saved.
Sir Dragonet was on track to defend his Cox Plate crown after taking out the Group 1 Tancred Stakes in Sydney earlier in the year and solid runs in the Makybe Diva and Turnbull stakes.
"It is with great sadness to report that Cox Plate champion Sir Dragonet has been euthanised after tragically breaking down in a track gallop this morning," Moonee Valley Racing Club posted.

It's understood the accident occurred in the warm-up at about the 800m mark, severely souring the run which also included favourite Zaaki, Verry Elleegant and Gold Trip.
Sydney jockey Glenn Boss was set to arrive in Melbourne next week to team up with Sir Dragonet for the title defence.
