A Spanish handballer has made headlines around the world after appearing to target the face of an opposition player with a powerful throw from point blank range.

Jorge Maqueda was in action against Germany at the European Championships when he stepped-up for a penalty throw, no more than 10 metres from goal.

By anyone's reckoning, he was a legitimate chance to score, but instead of drilling the ball toward the back of the net, he instead fired it into the face of Steffen Weinhold who was one of five players forming a wall, just metres away.

The force of the blow sent Weinhold tumbling to the ground, triggering uproar from the German players and resulting in an immediate red card for Maqueda.
