Pittsburgh Steelers receiver Antonio Brown has started a social media frenzy after he appeared in a television interview with a new haircut.

Brown, who has been picked by many experts to take the NFL by storm this season, was interviewed for a segment on NBC to be shown before the opening match against the New England Patriots.

But the 27-year-old's on-field ability was quickly forgotten as his new hair style overshadowed the interview with hilarious results.

Twitter users were quick to savage Brown's new look with a bombardment of memes exploding across social media.

Popular among the attacks was the observation Brown may have been influenced by some of his favourite childhood playthings.

Another was that Brown may have been channelling his inner Olympian.

Other Twitter users just couldn't believe the Steeler thought stepping out of the salon was a good idea.

The cutting remarks proved another painful blow on a disappointing opening night for the Steelers, with the Patriots claiming a 28-21 win.
