Victorian youngsters Lucas Herbert and Brett Coletta have surprised the field to lead at the halfway mark of the Queensland Open.

Second-year professional Herbert and amateur Coletta held a one-stroke lead over South Australian Max McCardle at Brisbane Golf Club following the second round on Friday.

At four under, Herbert and Coletta lead the $110,000 tournament after they carded rounds of two under and one under, respectively.

Herbert's round featured an eagle on the par-five 12th, two birdies and two bogeys.

It puts Coletta, 20, in with a chance for the biggest win of his young career after finishing runner-up at the Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship last week.

"Last week was a bit of a disappointment, but I have come here to put my best foot forward. To be leading is very good. I am happy," Coletta said.

Overnight leader Deyen Lawson dropped to eighth after shooting a four-over 74.

The highlight of the day belonged to NSW's Dimi Papadatos who aced the par-three fourth using his nine iron.
