Sweden’s Henrik Stenson could barely believe his luck at the US Open this morning after firing an eagle following a less than impressive front nine to begin the tournament.

It was a horror start to the tournament for the Swede after he struggled through the front nine scoring five bogeys.

But somehow Stenson managed to put all that behind him and pulled off a magnificent shot down the back end.

The 41-year-old sunk an incredible approach shot on the 451-yard 11th hole which brought him back to + 2.

Unfortunately his troubles with the club returned double bogeying on the 12th hole.

The first day at Erin Hills was a struggle for most with Australians Jason Day and Marc Leishman both finding themselves at the end of the leaderboard.

Day didn’t really impress on day one and was dwindling at the bottom as he stayed around +7 for most of the afternoon.

But countryman Marc Leishman ended the day at four under par to entrench himself in the top 10.
