PLAYER OF THE DAY: Shane Lowry - the Irishman converted a four-stroke third-round lead into a commanding six-shot victory with his nerveless Sunday 72.

STAT OF THE DAY: Lowry joined Padraig Harrington (2007 and 2008 British Open and 2008 US PGA) as only the second man from the Republic of Ireland to win a major championship.

QUOTE OF THE DAY: "It's just incredible to be sitting here with a trophy in front of me. Look at the names on it," Lowry on his "surreal" triumph.

TOURNAMENT SUMMARY: Lowry, with rounds of 67-67-63-72, finished with a 15-under-par 72-hole total of 269, with Englishman Tommy Fleetwood second at nine under after a closing 74. American Tony Finau (71) was third at seven under, while world No.1 Brooks Koepka (74) shared fourth place a further stroke behind with Englishman Lee Westwood (73). Cameron Smith, the only Australian to make the halfway cut, finished tied 20th at one under after a 76.
