McKenzie leads Vic PGA by two

Former bank teller David McKenzie hopes to cash in on his great start to the Victorian PGA Championship, where he holds a two-shot lead going into the final two rounds.

McKenzie (12 under) finished with a flourish on Wednesday, sinking four straight birdies at Huntingdale in his second consecutive round of 66.

New Zealander Brad Shilton is outright second after mixing six birdies and four bogeys to sign for a 70.

It came on the back of a bogey-free course record 64 on day one.

Ashley Hall, a three-time Huntingdale club champion while an amateur, is tied for third spot at nine under par alongside defending champion Aaron Townsend.

Rookie professional Anthony Houston shares equal fourth place at seven under with Aron Price, while four others including veteran Peter O'Malley, power-hitter Todd Sinnott, Michael Sim and Kiwi Mark Brown round out the top-10 one shot further back.

McKenzie, a winner of this championship in 2013, was a runner up at the 2004 Australian Masters and is considered something of a journeyman.

"I'm hitting it good and feeling confident," he said.

"Just need the putts to keep falling.

"And there is a big incentive for me to keep it going as I need to win this tournament to get a start in some of the bigger ones coming up."

Lisa Jean, the first woman to compete in the men's Victorian PGA Championship, shot rounds of 78 and 73 for a 36-hole total of 151, seven shots more than she needed to make the cut and achieve her stated goal for the week of making the final two rounds of competition.

Jean qualified for the PGA tournament after winning the Victorian club professional title midway through last year.
