McIlroy shows he can putt, drive – and catch

His putting and driving was enough to claim his fourth major title, but even after winning the PGA Championship Rory McIlroy showed his skills aren’t limited to golf.

The world no. 1 was being presented the prestigious Wanamaker Trophy by PGA president Ted Bishop following his one stroke win, when the golf chief lost grip of the silverware as he reached out to shake McIlroy's hand.

As the footage shows, the trophy lid falls off and appears destined to hit the ground, only for McIlroy to swoop with cat-like reflexes and protect his prize.

It was a catch that would have earned the 25-year-old a "marvellous" call from cricket great Ritchie Benaud and saved Bishop from much embarrassment.

Of course, it was in McIlroy's best interest to make the catch with the Northern Irishman no doubt planning a celebratory drink from the trophy, which could have been put on hold for repairs had the lid hit the turf.

All in all it was a perfect day for the sharp shooter, who showed nerves of steel to hold on for a thrilling victory ahead of a fast-finishing Phil Mickelson.
