McIlroy endures horror four-putt disaster

World No.1 golfer Rory McIlroy may be a three-time major champion, but that doesn’t mean he’s not susceptible to a major choke now and again.

Golf fans were left stunned when the 25-year-old walked off the par-three twelfth hole at the BMW Championship after needing four putts from within two metres to card an incredible triple bogey.

McIlroy stood on the tee of the 187 metre hole at seven-under for the tournament and in a strong position to challenge for the title.

And even when the Northern Irishman missed the green to the right, a bogey seemed to be the worst outcome after he knocked his long chip to within two metres of the cup.

But as the footage shows, McIlroy’s immaculate putting mysteriously deserts him, blasting his first attempt past the hole before scaring the lip with his second putt.

Worse was still to come though as McIlroy, without taking the time to check the line of the third putt, watched in horror as his double bogey attempt swung around the edge of the cup.

The reigning British Open and PGA Champion finally ends the pain with a fourth putt before ridding himself of the source of his frustration, smashing the ball into the adjoining hazard.
