Jones hits brilliant shot from grandstand

Australia’s Matt Jones has hit a ball from the top deck of a grandstand to make a stunning recovery during his third round at the US PGA Championship.

Leading the tournament at Whistling Straits, Jones hooked a fairway shot into aa grandstand on the ninth hole to seemingly derail his momentum.

But rather than take a drop into the rough below, the 35-year-old played from the top deck of the stand, hitting a perfect iron shot to just miss the green.

The brilliant recovery has gone viral on YouTube and earned the Cronulla golfer glowing plaudits.

It also helped keep Jones in contention for a breakthrough major title, although he later faded in the round to finish with four bogeys and card a 73 to slip to equal sixth at 10-under.

Compatriot Jason Day took the lead with a six-under-66 to move to 15-under for the tournament heading into the final round.
