Durant's incredible miss proves very costly
American golfer Joe Durant has given hope to all weekend hackers, with a shocking miss during the final round of the PGA Tour Champions’ Shaw Charity Classic that has cost him over a quarter of million dollars.
Durant, 54, is no mug. He won four times on the PGA Tour, and since moving to the Champions Tour has won a further three times, most recently in February.
But faced with a putt of around 30 centimetres on the 17th hole of the final round, Durant casually stepped up, expecting to make the simple par putt and remain within a shot of leader Scott McCarron.
Instead the putt caught the left edge and lipped out, leaving the commentators stunned.
“Wow,” said one.
“My goodness,” said another.
“All things considered, one of the worst misses you’ll ever see,” tweeted Sports Illustrated golf writer Daniel Rapaport.
McCarron went on to beat Durant by a single shot, the inexplicable miss costing Durant a shot at the title in a playoff.
Durant’s bank manager won’t be very impressed, with the difference in prizemoney a cool $250,000.
