Australian golf star Jason Day breaks down over mother Dening's terminal illness

Australian golfer Jason Day has broken down explaining that his mother had been told she has a terminal illness and has just 12 months to live.

Day’s mother Dening – who is suffering from cancer - has flown to the US for further medical help. The former world No.1 said he would be spending more time with her.

''She had all the tests done in Australia and the doctors said it was terminal and she only had 12 months to live,’’ he said.

''I’ve already gone through it (a battle against cancer) once with my dad, I know how it feels.

''As of now I’m going to be back with my mum … and make sure everything goes well with her.’’

Day, who lost his father to cancer when he was 12-years-old, fronted the media after conceding his match against Pat Perez at the Dell Match Play Championships in Texas after just six holes.

He said his mother had a 3-4cm mass on one of her lungs.

''I know my mum said to not let it get to me, but I know it has. I just need some time away with her to make sure it goes well. It’s been very tough for me.’’

With the US Masters just two weeks away, it remains to be seen whether Day will take part in the first major of the year.
