Hend implodes as Wood wins at Wentworth

Britain's Chris Wood has achieved the biggest victory of his career with victory the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth after Australian overnight leader Scott Hend imploded on the final day to finish tied for 15th place.

Wood claimed the first prize of $A1.28 million after firing a closing three-under-par 69 to finish nine-under at the European Tour's flagship event - one shot ahead of Sweden's Rikard Karlberg.

The Englishman's day to remember was in stark contrast to the once experienced by Hend who had fired an eagle at the 18th hole on Saturday to open up a one-shot lead.

The Queenslander began the day at nine-under but a double-bogey six on the first hole gave him an abysmal start.

Although he clawed back a shot with a birdie on the par-five fourth, it was to prove to be as good as it got for the 43-year-old who was nine-over for the first 14 holes in an alarming meltdown that ended his challenge and saw him finish with a six-over par 78 for an overall score of 285 - half a dozen strokes behind Wood.

Karlberg compiled the best round of the day, a hole-in-one at the second helping him to a 65 for 280.

It was the second ace of the day as Britain's James Morrison also had an ace at the 14th to win a car from the sponsors worth around $A190,000.

US Masters champion Danny Willett posted a 71 to take third place on 281.
