Day salvages miracle par at PGA Championship

Jason Day can scramble.

The Australian golfer found himself in a deep mess when his usually straight and booming drive deserted him on the par-four second hole of the PGA Championship.

In the footage, Day looked the epitome of calm on the tee, focusing on his deliberate pre-shot routine.

But the 26-year-old’s swing said otherwise, his shot careering across a creek and into wild, untameable rough.

Undeterred by the long, lush grass, Day took off his shoes, rolled up his trousers, ploughed into the creek and surveyed the damage.

His caddy, Col Swatton, unable to take his bag across the stream, threw Day a club, and the world no. 9 got to work, powering the ball out of the jungle and across the fairway into the right rough.

He then executed a solid pitch shot and, still left with a nervy putt, grabbed an incredible par from the jaws of a certain bogey.

That hole epitomised the world no. 9’s third round, where he couldn’t find a fairway or buy a putt, but somehow managed to get around the Valhalla Golf Course with a two-under 69 scorecard to cling to the coattails of leader Rory McIlroy.
