World No.2 Jason Day's title defence at Torrey Pines could be over before it begins as the Queenslander has withdrawn from the Farmers Insurance Open Pro-Am Wednesday with the flu.

Day, who kick-started his five-win season in 2015 with victory at the iconic coastal course has been battling the virus for a few days and remains unable to practise but hopes to play in Thursday's opening round.

Having missed a scheduled practice round with young 17-year-old Australian star Ryan Ruffels on Tuesday while "sick as a dog" Day will enter the tournament, if at all, a little underdone.

Day became the first Australian to win at Torrey Pines a year ago, winning a four-man playoff.

It is not all bad news as the last time the 28-year-old missed his Pro-am, the 2015 Barclays, he went on to win the tournament by six shots.
