Adam Scott has stormed into a share of the lead and will play in Sunday's final group at the US PGA Tour event in Los Angeles.

Three back-nine birdies, including one on his last hole, rounded out a third round 67 that lifted Scott to a 10-under-par 203 total.

The Australian is the 54-hole co-leader with world No.1 Rory McIlroy (68) and Matt Kuchar (70) and the three will comprise the final group on Sunday at the famed Riviera Country Club.

Russell Henley (68) and Harold Varner (69) are tied for fourth at nine under.

Scott, the 2005 winner at Riviera, began his round on Saturday ominously with a disappointing par at the reachable par-5 opening hole and a bogey on the second.

However, four birdies in a five-hole stretch starting at the seventh gave him momentum.

He played the back nine patiently and fired an approach to the 18th green to nine feet.

He made the tricky downhill putt to give himself a good chance at victory in his first event of 2020.

Marc Leishman was the only other Australian to make the weekend and his 68 elevated him to three under and a share of 28th.

Scott won the Australian PGA Championship in December for his first tournament victory in almost four years.

The most recent of his 13 PGA Tour wins was in March 2016.

Scott will be relying on his history at Riviera, where he has a win and two second-place finishes.
