Young Zidane goes from villain to hero

The panenka chip shot is the double-edged sword of penalties – hit it right and you're a hero, miss and you’re a dunce.

But French keeper Luca Zidane - son of the great Zinedine Zidane - got a reprieve from a panenka miss after blowing his penalty but then saving a series of shots in goal to help his side qualify for the Euro Under 17s tournament final.

Playing in the semi-final against Bulgaria, Zidane stepped up to the spot during an extra-time penalty shootout and chipped his shot into the crossbar.

But the teenager managed to turn from villain to hero when he stopped three shots from the Bulgarians to help the French win the match.

Zidane's panenka fail comes nine years after his famous father memorably scored with the same play during France's 2006 World Cup final loss to Italy.

The shot gave France a 1-0 lead before Zidane was later sent off, with the Italians later winning the match in a penalty shootout.

But at least this time around there was a happy ending for young Luca, although he might shelve the panenka in future.
