WSW could put five goals past anyone: Popa

Tony Popovic would be delighted with a 1-0 win over Wellington, but he's also confident Western Sydney could put five goals past any A-League opposition.

Last month in-form forward Mark Bridge announced it was only a matter of time before the Wanderers dished out a six-goal punishment to one of their rivals.

Their biggest tally for a match came two weeks ago when they defeated Melbourne City 4-3.

"We put four in two weeks ago, so we've done the four," Popovic said.

"Five would be nice.

"But we shouldn't look at it in the way of who we're playing against.

"I believe it could happen against anyone with the amount of chances we create.

"We have to show Wellington the respect they deserve.

"I'd be happy with a 95th-minute winner and a 1-0 victory - I'd be over the moon."

The Wanderers have been the masters of orchestrating chances this season, often only falling short on the final touch.

Their scintillating form makes them heavy favourites to overcome the struggling Phoenix at Pirtek Stadium on Sunday, and reclaim the table lead two points clear of Brisbane.

Ernie Merrick's injury-ravaged squad haven't tasted victory in nine matches, and are only four points ahead of bottom-placed Central Coast.

However Popovic will have to deal without his three key Spaniards, with both Alberto and Dimas suspended and Andreu out with a hamstring injury.

It's the first time all three vital components of his team's incredible success this season have been absent, though the coach backed their replacements to perform.

Jonathan Aspropotamitis is the most likely to replace Alberto in central defence, while Jacob Pepper and Kearyn Baccus appear set to cover the midfield pair.

"We've obviously got a few challenges with all three Spanish boys out," Popovic said.

"That will be a new situation for us, but also an exciting one for other players to step in.

"We've had a look at a few combinations, and whoever plays on Sunday will be fully supported and backed."
