Wonderstrike icing on the cake for Socceroos

He may not be a household name in Australian football, but Aaron Mooy provided the highlight of the night as the Socceroos demolished Bangladesh in their World Cup qualifier.

Mooy, who continues to ply his trade in the A-League despite a brilliant junior career, earned his seventh cap for Australia in a match that always threatened to be a one-sided affair. And while the reigning Asian Cup champions duly delivered by slamming home final unanswered goals against the world's 173rd-ranked side, it was the last by Mooy that lit-up Perth's nib Stadium. Mooy made it 5-0 in the 61st minute with a long-range screamer from outside the box.

The wonderstrike served as a powerful reminder of the midfielder's talent whilst capping a party atmosphere for the crowd of 19,495, the biggest at the venue for a football match.

The turnout was a strong statement from the Perth public in the first Socceroos game held there in a decade.

Coach Ange Postecoglou's selections were intriguing, not the least of which the decision to bench Tim Cahill, who had been unveiled as stand-in skipper the day before the match.

A sterner test no doubt awaits next week in Dushanbe against Tajikistan, who sit 153rd on the FIFA rankings.
