Sam Kerr's Chelsea silence critics with brutal 6-0 rout, but Matildas captain can't get on the scoresheet

Chelsea bounced back from a shock loss to dispatch Roma 6-0 with ruthless efficiency in the Women's Champions League on Thursday (AEDT).

Chelsea's reign of invincibility came to an end on Monday (AEDT) as Everton delivered a 1-0 upset in the Women's Super League to end a 34-game unbeaten run.

The champions had not tasted defeat in the league since May last year - a remarkable 585-day unbeaten streak.

Chelsea are now chasing Manchester City in the WSL and they took their frustrations out on their Italian visitors at Stamford Bridge.

Matildas captain Sam Kerr started up front and caused problems without troubling the scorers.

Kerr went close in the 13th minute but Sandy Baltimore's cross just evaded her leaping head as Roma's Valentina Bergamaschi turned it in for an own goal instead.

Kerr also had a shot saved by Olivie Lukasova and Johanna Rytting Kaneryd pounced on the rebound to score Chelsea's third against the Serie A leaders.

Wieke Kaptein, Sjoeke Nusken, Maika Hamano and Lucy Bronze were the home team's other goalscorers in a performance that will silence critics claiming that Chelsea's dynasty was coming to an end.

Kerr played 70 minutes and Matildas teammate Ellie Carpenter was an unused substitute.

Kerr's workrate was strong and she got two of her four shots on target.

Chelsea are now third in the Champions League behind Barcelona and Lyon.

"I think we had a really good reaction tonight," Chelsea manager Sonia Bompastor said.

"A good performance and a good result. That's what I wanted to see from my team and the expectations we had for ourselves.
It was a really good team performance.

"From the beginning of the game, the players who started the game and the ones who came in had an impact, so different scorers, and I think a lot of positive things from the game tonight.

"Being able to open the scoring and double the score, you just kill the game and the opposition's hope, and it changed pretty much everything tonight. When we are able to be efficient, it's a big help.

"Sometimes it helps just to turn things around to score early on the game. It gives enough confidence to the players to score even more goals and to create even more situations.

"So it's the small details and fine margins, but the fact that we scored the first goal as an own goal, probably the confidence for the other team goes down, and our confidence goes up. When you are able to go in 3-0 up at halftime, I think it's a big break and big enough for you to be confident.

"I'm really pleased with tonight, and I think keeping the momentum now will be crucial. We know where we are in the league table."
