UN gets dressed up for World Cup party

Members of the United Nations Security Council have let their hair down in the usually tense chamber by donning their national team's strips to celebrate the World Cup kick-off.

Secretary-General Antonio Guterres wore a black referee's shirt as diplomats who have recently exchanged barbs over crises in international affairs stood shoulder-to-shoulder and smiled for the camera.

The UK's permanent representative to the UN, Karen Pierce, lined up with US ambassador Nikki Haley to her right and Russian ambassador Vassily Nebenzia to her left.

Holding an official World Cup football, the host nation's UN representative stood next to Mr Guterres, who posed for the group shot holding a yellow card.
