Transfer fee to dictate Jurman Sydney exit

Sydney FC won't stop Matt Jurman moving to Asia in the January transfer window if the A-League club can draw a lucrative enough transfer fee for their key central defender.

Jurman is courting interest from multiple overseas clubs, including one in South Korea, who want to sign him next month - six months before his contract expires at the end of June.

The 27-year-old vice-captain discovered a rich vein of form last season, culminating in him being named club player of the year.

It's been no different this campaign, when Jurman and fellow centre-back Alex Wilkinson have played a big role in the Sky Blues' record-breaking unbeaten start with just five goals conceded.

Jurman appears likely to head abroad either in the summer window or in the off-season.

Sydney have received no formal offers as yet but coach Graham Arnold indicated that if one should come, the decision would be based on money.

"Depends what the transfer fee is," Arnold said.

"Of course we want to keep Matty Jurman but if something came along that the kid could - financially for himself - set himself up for life (we won't stop that).

"If it does eventuate - we don't know if that's the case - but if it does, he's been fantastic for the club.

"He's a wonderful guy and the club, this beautiful club of Sydney, will wish him well."

In one respect, Sydney's scintillating campaign could be to their own detriment, with their players becoming more and more desired by cashed-up clubs who can offer far bigger salaries than the salary cap-restricted A-League.

The rise of right-back Rhyan Grant has also attracted attention, with a Scandinavian club reportedly interested.

Grant's standout form has prompted commentators to suggest the off-contract 25-year-old be given a Socceroos debut and will likely demand a higher wage should he stay next season.
