Tottenham goalkeeper Friedel to retire

Record-breaking goalkeeper Brad Friedel will retire at the end of the English football season season.

The American, who turns 44 on Monday, hangs up his gloves after 17 years in English football, during which time he played for Liverpool, Blackburn and Aston Villa.

Friedel holds the record of 310 consecutive Premier League appearances, the last of which came in October 2012, in a Tottenham shirt.

"I'm incredibly proud of what I've achieved in my career," Friedel told the Tottenham website.

"When I first started the journey I never imagined it would be this long, playing 23 seasons in total and representing some incredible clubs.

"One thing I will miss is that day-to-day interaction with the staff and players. There really is nothing like it but my 44th birthday is here so I think it is a good time to call it a day." Friedel, who lost his place in the side to Hugo Lloris, is to swap his gloves for a microphone, working for Fox Sports in the United States an an analyst, pundit and co-commentator, Tottenham said.

He will also be Tottenham's club amabassador in the United States.

Friedel has played 450 times in the Premier League and also earned 82 caps for the United States, representing them in three World Cups.
