It was the World Cup final moment Argentina will rue.

Striker Gonzalo Higuain was given a gift-wrapped opportunity in the 22nd minute to give his team the lead after a horrible mistake from Toni Kroos.

As the match footage shows, the Napoli star was put clean through on goal by the German's stray header and had just goalkeeper Manuel Neuer to beat, but he could only snatch his shot wide.

The miss prompted commentator Martin Tyler to comment on Higuain's potential regret should Argentina lose.

"It's a World Cup final he might have won in the first quarter of the game," Tyler said as Higuain was replaced by Rodrigo Palacio in the 78th minute.

"An evening he may come to regret."

Tyler's words were prophetic after Germany claimed their fourth World Cup win thanks to an extra time winner from substitute Mario Goetze.
