Sydney FC peaking for W-League final

When it comes to Sunday's W-League grand final, Sydney FC are forgetting Melbourne City's perfect record through the season.

The Sky Blues have pushed aside the memory of City's October 6-0 demolition job in their first meeting of the campaign.

Instead, the underdogs in Sunday's decider are hoping they've timed their best form when it counts.

Long-serving Sky Blue servant Leena Khamis says their last clash - a tight 2-1 loss to City, in the final regular-season match - shows progress.

"The difference between round one and the last round was chalk and cheese," she said.

"We actually showed up and played with a bit of confidence.

"We're peaking at the right time and, hopefully, we can get them in the one that counts."

The W-League season looked to be heading towards a City-Canberra decider until last weekend, when Sydney stole a 1-0 victory from the capital.

Khamis insisted the grand final would still be a spectacle, promising to take the fight to the dominant City side.

"I don't think we've snatched it off Canberra - they're a great team but we're just as good," she said.

"We never doubted ourselves we could make a finals berth.

"We know they've been the best team all year but we have the belief we can win."

Khamis has played in both a winning and losing grand final with Sydney, before a major knee injury robbed her of the chance to play in the 2013 decider.

The 29-year-old watched on from the bench as her teammates won in Melbourne against the Victory in 2013.

She said retirement went through her head after a second ACL injury in 2014, but recovering to qualify for this match helped justify her long rehabilitation.

"I'm so excited and I can't wait," she said.

"The whole team is excited and there's a great vibe at training. It's going to be a thriller."
