Socceroos star Aaron Mooy pens heartbreaking tribute after death of brother Alex

Socceroos star Aaron Mooy has penned an emotional tribute to his brother Alex, who passed away earlier this week.

Mooy took to Instagram yesterday to notify his followers of the sudden passing of his brother, who too was a talented footballer having played at NPL level.

"Love you, bro," Mooy wrote on Instagram. "We will miss you every day.

"I'm sorry I didn't do more to help you. I thought after the birth of Kilian you would heal and now it's too late.

"I will and always have cherished all our good times together!

"You were my biggest fan and always there for me through the good and bad and I'm very grateful for all your help.

"I know you are at peace now and you will be watching over all of us. Love ya, Alex Mooy."

The post received an outpouring of support which included the likes of Tim Cahill, who responded with: "Sending my thoughts and prayers to you and the family Aaron."

The former English Premier League midfielder, who now plays for Chinese Super League club Shanghai Port, opted against joining the Socceroos squad earlier this month for the World Cup Qualifiers.

Mooy made the decision to use the international break to spend time with his family.

Football Australia this afternoon followed Mooy's message with its own, tweeting that the governing body was "deeply saddened to have learned of the passing of Alex Mooy."
