Santalab celebrates penalty with fans pic

Footballers are nothing but inventive when it comes to goal celebrations.

But rather than making it all about himself, Western Sydney Wanderers striker Brendon Santalab chose to focus on fans after scoring a penalty during his side's A-League clash with the Newcastle Jets.

The 32-year-old showed brilliant touch and nerve to beat Jets keeper Ben Kennedy with a 'Panenka' style penalty to put the Wanderers ahead in the 88th minute.

A jubilant Santalab immediately moved to celebrate with teammates, before having second thoughts and charging behind the goal, where he poached a camera from a media photographer.

He then gestured to the adoring Red and Black Bloc of Wanderers fans to pose while he snapped a photo of the masses to create a picture perfect moment.

The celebration was almost as inventive as the footballer who first unveiled the 'Paneka' penalty - Czechoslovakia's Antonin Paneka.

Paneka first produced the cheeky play, which involves a player feigning to kick one way and then chipping the ball after the keeper dives prematurely, to help his side win a penalty shootout against West Germany in the final of the 1976 European Championship.

The move has since been imitated with equal amounts of success and failure in football matches at all levels around the world.

Fortunately for Santalab it paid dividends, however the Wanderers later conceded a penalty with the match finishing drawn at 1-1.
