Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney make first appearance at Wrexham match since buying club

Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney have made their first appearance at a Wrexham game since buying the Welsh football team.

The pair travelled to Maidenhead United's York Road ground, roughly 45km west of London, for Wrexham's game in the fifth tier of the English football pyramid.

Deadpool star Reynolds and It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia creator McElhenney completed a takeover of the Welsh side, who are one of the world's oldest professional clubs, in November last year.

Wrexham fell behind 2-0 early before clawing back to 2-2, only to lose 3-2 to a late second half winner.

"We didn't want our first win to be away anyway," McElhenney joked afterwards.

Reynolds said on Instagram that football was "a beautiful, heartbreaking, soul-deadening, evil and gorgeous game and I'm never sleeping again."

Through their company - RR McReynolds Company LLC - the takeover deal received the backing of almost all of the 2,000 members of the Wrexham Supporters Trust.

Reynolds and McElhenney injected $2.5 million US ($3.3 million AUD) into the club after the takeover was confirmed.

"I'm really disappointed for them that we haven't been able to come away with at least a draw. But that's football. It can be a brutal industry," Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson told the BBC after the match.

"They [the new owners] flew in today and they were trying to keep a low profile, but I imagine it's fairly difficult to be low profile and they let us get on with it.

"We look forward to meeting them later in the week."
