Roar have to be 'smart' with Theo

John Aloisi admits Brisbane Roar will have to be "smart" in how they manage veteran goalkeeper Michael Theo, who has been ruled out for the second consecutive week due to injury.

The 34-year-old, who made just four appearances last season as he battled groin and wrist injuries, has been unable to overcome a quad strain suffered last week and will miss Saturday night's home A-League clash against Adelaide United.

Aloisi described the injury as "nothing major" but said the Roar would consider reducing or tapering Theo's training workloads, which he believes could actually extend the five-time A-League championship-winning goalkeeper's career.

"It starts to happen when you get to a certain age," Aloisi told reporters on Thursday.

"Even though he wants to do exactly the same as everyone else, it gets to a stage in your career where you have to be smart about it and that's up to us to make sure we're smart for him.

"I remember towards the end of my career I had to cut back a lot more than that.

"I probably could only train once a week, I'm sure Craig Moore was the same when he was at the end of his career.

"It's part of it. I'm not saying Michael is at the end of his career - this will probably prolong it."

Both Theo and Jamie Young, who will don the gloves against the Reds on Saturday, are out of contract at the end of the season.

Meanwhile, Aloisi also confirmed defender Shane Stefanutto will be part of Brisbane's match day squad having shaken off a calf injury he has been carrying since pre-season.

"It's good to have him back, he's a very experienced player, a leader on and off the field and he coaches out there," he said.

It's anticipated either German import Jerome Polenz or left-back Corey Brown will drop out of the Roar's squad to make way for Stefanutto, who has already confirmed his intention to retire at the end of the season and move into a backroom role with the club.
