Chelsea star stands in goal for 20 seconds after all-time miss; Spurs sink further into the mire

Two calamitous moments conspired to badly burn Chelsea as the Premier League heavyweights were held to a surprise 2-2 draw at home to lowly Leeds United.

Chelsea were cruising at 2-0 up in the second half after Joao Pedro scored a classy goal and Cole Palmer converted from the penalty spot.

But Lukas Nmecha gave Leeds hope with his own successful spot kick before an embarrassing sequence of events led to Noah Okafor's 73rd minute equaliser.

The action resembled an under-5s game as multiple confused Chelsea defenders got in each other's way and goalkeeper Robert Sanchez was unable to clean up the chaos.

Okafor had an easy finish but it looked like Palmer would steal back the three points, deep into added time at London's Stamford Bridge.

The England star had a tap-in opportunity at the far post but Palmer inexplicably sent Moises Caicedo's cross over the bar from point-blank range.

Palmer stood in the goal with his mouth agape for about 20 seconds after the costly miss.

"Ninety nine times out of 100 Cole scores that but we shouldn't be in that situation," Chelsea manager Liam Rosenior said.

"Six minutes of switching off. We were in complete control of the game. I don't want to talk about the football. If we want to improve and get to where I think we can be, we have to just make sure we are switched on for 90 minutes. It is as simple as that.

"Devastated because some of the football we played was excellent and we should come away with three points. And now we haven't because of two moments in the game we haven't taken care of and we give Leeds a point, we gift them a point."

Chelsea are fifth on the ladder while Manchester United remained fourth after snatching a late 1-1 draw with West Ham United on Wednesday (AEDT).

Benjamin Sesko came to United's rescue with the equaliser six minutes into added time at London Stadium.

Relegation-threatened West Ham moved to 24 points, two points away from the safety zone.

Tomas Soucek put West Ham ahead five minutes into the second half and it looked as though they would claim a precious win until Sesko's clever finish deep into added time broke home hearts.

United's run of four successive wins came to an end as interim manager Michael Carrick dropped his first points in charge on what was a frustrating night for his Champions League-chasing side before Sesko's late cameo.

West Ham's point leaves several clubs nervously looking over their shoulder, not least 17th-placed Nottingham Forest (26 points) and Tottenham (29), who will have celebrated Sesko's equaliser along with United fans.

The visitors only had three shots on target in the entire game as West Ham did well to keep chances at a premium, but as they dominated possession in the final 15 minutes, there was a feeling of inevitability about the goal.

In a warning sign, United substitute Joshua Zirkzee had flashed a header inches wide of the post just before the leveller.

United went close to the opener midway through the first half when Luke Shaw steered a shot goalwards but Aaron Wan-Bissaka was able to clear the ball off the line against his former side. West Ham took the lead as Soucek ghosted in to prod home from inside the six-yard box from Jarrod Bowen's low cross.

Casemiro headed the ball into the net from Kobbie Mainoo's cross but was offside and as the visitors poured forward, West Ham wasted several opportunities to score a second on the break.

The equaliser came when Bryan Mbeumo fired a dangerous low ball into the box and Sesko provided a superb volley, much to the dismay of West Ham manager Nuno Espirito Santo and most inside the London Stadium.

Also in London, the pressure intensified around Tottenham Hotspur manager Thomas Frank as Newcastle United came to town and grabbed a 2-1 win.

The result left Spurs languishing in 16th place - just five points above the relegation zone - as Leeds jumped one spot ahead with their draw.

Tottenham supporters left no doubt about their feelings at the end of the encounter with jeers ringing out around the stadium as they suffered an 11th league defeat since the manager arrived from Brentford.

Spurs next play north London rivals and league leaders Arsenal on Monday (AEDT).

"I'm convinced I will still be in charge," Frank said.

"I understand the question and easy to point to me, but it's about the whole club. 1000 per cent sure I thought we would be doing better.

"There's been a few before me up here at Tottenham and at other clubs that have lost their head, but we need to stick together and keep a calm head.

"I understand the frustration and the easiest thing is to point at me.

"That's part of the job unfortunately. I will work day and night to turn this around but it is not just one person. There is no doubt we need to improve and I need to be part of that."
