Postecoglou keeps Socceroos on their toes

On paper it's one of Ange Postecoglou's biggest conundrums - how to squeeze attacking midfield triumvirate of Aaron Mooy, Tom Rogic and Massimo Luongo onto the park together.

But a combined assault is not necessarily the key to Socceroos success, the coach says.

One of Postecoglou's central aims at the helm of the Australian national team has been to build enough depth that he can throw any number of starting XI combinations on and know they can intimidate opponents, as they did in last Thursday's merciless 7-0 World Cup qualifying blitz of Tajikistan in Adelaide.

Mooy and Luongo started that match, the latter scoring in the second minute as the pair split the Tajiks' defence wide open.

Rogic then replaced Luongo for the last 23 minutes, and used the time to net two goals in as many minutes.

The Celtic playmaker's classy performance gave the 23-year-old a strong case for a starting spot in Tuesday's vital qualifier against Jordan in Sydney.

And he might have his wish, with Postecoglou indicating he'll make at least two or three changes.

But is there room for all three young attacking sparks to play at once?

"It depends - the way were evolving our play, it's not just those three competing for spots," Postecoglou said.

"It's a great weapon to have ... if I start with Aaron or Mass, I can throw Tom on for the last half an hour, and no team is going to like that.

"If I start with Tom and Mass, I can thrown Aaron on. Or all three.

"At the same time we have a structure, in the past we've been guilty as a national team of trying to fit all our best players into one team.

"Now their role in the team might be 90 mins or 30 or five."

Experimenting with new players has been Postecoglou's recent focus as he attempts to hone his squad in preparation for the final phase of qualifying - which the Socceroos will likely make.

But having seen his regular stars sharpen their focus in the presence of new faces including striker Apostolos Giannou and full-backs Jason Geria and Alex Gersbach, he's re-thinking the notion of cementing a preferred group.

"I'm getting to the point where I'm going 'Well you know what, do I really need a settled line-up?'," Postecoglou said.

"I know people want that and get comfort in that, but it's worked well for us to keep everyone on edge so far.

"Going into this camp we've left some pretty good players out of the actual squad, who were a big part of what's happened in the last two years.

"So if we do well in these two games, all of a sudden there's pressure within and pressure outside.

"I like that aspect of it ... so whilst you're doing something to build some sort of core foundation, there's part of me that wants to keep that uncertainty around it as well."
