Portland Timbers reach MLS Cup final

The Portland Timbers are through to their first MLS Cup after overcoming a scare to earn a 5-3 aggregate victory over FC Dallas which secured the Western Conference Championship.

Portland won the first leg 3-1 on home soil and looked on course to cruise into the final after Fanendo Adi broke the deadlock nine minutes into the second half of the reverse fixture.

But Dallas, who finished seven points ahead of the Timbers in the regular season, rallied and gave themselves hope through Ryan Hollingshead's neat finish in the 69th minute.

The momentum was with the hosts all of a sudden and they sensed a remarkable comeback when Blas Perez headed home five minutes later.

Dallas pushed on in search of a third goal which would have taken the tie to extra time.

However, they were caught on the break in the dying seconds.

Lucas Melano beat Jesse Gonzalez with a nice bit of skill before tapping the ball in from a tight angle to give the Timbers a 2-2 draw on the night and a bit of history.
