Penalty shootout breaks FA Cup record

Non-league side Worcester City were on the wrong end of a history breaking FA Cup penalty shootout after they lost an epic decider 14-13 to Scunthorpe United.

The combatants needed the dreaded shootout after they couldn’t be separated over two games, both 1-1 draws, in the second-round of the FA Cup.

But the shootout, in what is now a new record for the FA Cup, also looked unlikely to find a winner after 32 shots were fired at goal.

In those 32 penalties, five players faltered in the limelight, while 27 nailed home from the spot.

However, League One side Scunthorpe finally booked their spot in the third round when Worcester’s Wayne Thomas failed with his second attempt.

The previous longest penalty shootout in the FA Cup was when Macclesfield beat Forest Green 11-10 in 2001.

However, the longest shootout in history was a mammoth 48-penalty decider in the 2005 Namibian Cup between KK Palace and the Civics – Palace taking out the win 17-16.
