Merrick reckons Phoenix have FFA support

Wellington Phoenix coach Ernie Merrick is confident the club will be offered a 10-year licence, believing there is a groundswell of official support for the club's retention in the A-League.

Merrick has previously stayed out of the issue as Phoenix management consider whether to apply for the shortened four-year licence extension offered by Football Federation Australia.

However, the well-connected coach hinted at a momentum swing in favour of the Phoenix across the Tasman.

He says news of the club's possible exit had sparked loud protestations from other teams which has been noticed by FFA officials.

"They couldn't possibly exist without the Phoenix being in the A-League and that's what I hear behind the scenes a great deal from people," he told Radio Sport.

Merrick describes the licence issue as merely a "distraction" and says he is relaxed enough about it to direct his attention to on-field matters.

"I personally don't see anything other than us getting a 10-year licence."

The FFA has asked the Phoenix owners to try to broaden the club's support, starting with a better relationship with broadcasters.

The club, which is seeking a large crowd for Friday's home game against Adelaide, announced membership levels have grown to an all-time high since its future came under threat.

General manager David Dome says membership has reached 4400, surpassing last year's record figure.

"We are humbled by how many have come on board to Save the Nix," Dome said.

"We are still fighting for survival and we need a good crowd on Friday night to show that we mean business."

Several Wellington identities have been involved in campaigns this week to boost ticket sales and membership numbers.

Landmarks like the Wellington Railway Station, the Basin Reserve, the Bucket Fountain and motorway overbridges have been draped with yellow and black scarves.
