Wellington sharp shooter Michael McGlinchey set Westpac Stadium alight with a brilliant world class free kick goal during the Phoenix's 3-2 victory over Brisbane Roar.

With the home side trailing 1-0 in the 36th minute, McGlinchey stepped up to take a free kick from around 30-yards out from goal.

And while the commentators held doubts about whether the distance was beyond his range, the 28-year-old delivered a sublime strike to hit the back of the net.

Showing perfect technique, the Kiwi winger dipped the ball over the wall and curled it just inside the left post to leave Roar keeper Jamie Young with no chance.

The goal was McGlinchey's 17th A-League strike and his sixth for Wellington, but undoubtably his best in black and gold.

"Oh what a goal," screamed one of the commentators as the ball hit the back of the net.

"Michael McGlinchey lights up the Wellington night. What a strike from McGlinchey."The second commentator hailed the free kick as a "world class" strike.

"We were just thinking was that too far out for Michael McGlinchey but he stepped up and just caressed that one in the back of the net," he said.

"(That was) a world class free kick."
