Man United's Young to have groin surgery

Manchester United winger Ashley Young has a "severe" groin injury that requires surgery, manager Louis van Gaal says.

The 30-year-old was forced off in the first half of United's 1-0 win at Liverpool on Sunday by the injury.

"Ashley Young has a severe groin injury, it shall be operated on, so he's for a long time gone," van Gaal told MUTV on Friday.

"It's unbelievable, but we're not lucky with that."

Young has made 23 appearances in all competitions this season.

Van Gaal also said defender Phil Jones and midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger have yet to recover from recent injuries and will miss Saturday's match against Southampton.
