Brazilian fullback David Luiz is the toast of the nation after his stunning free kick helped the side edge out South American rivals Colombia for a World Cup semi-final spot.

Having only ever scored once before for Brazil - during the knock-out phase victory over Chile - Luiz seemed like an unlikely candidate to play goal scoring hero when he stepped up to take a free kick in the 70th minute.

But as this footage shows, the former Chelsea defender delivers a 30m thunderbolt to leave Colombian goalkeeper David Ospina dumbstruck - and Brazilian fans delirious with joy.

Colombian wunderkind James Rodriguez scored from the penalty spot seven minutes later to make it 2-1, but it proved too little, too late.

However, Brazil's joy was later soured with the news star striker Neymar was ruled out for the rest of the tournament with a back injury, which forced him to be stretchered from the field.
