Barca beaten again, Real Madrid slip-up

Barcelona have fallen to their third away defeat of the Spanish league season losing 3-1 at Levante but stay top of La Liga with Real Madrid, Sevilla and Atletico Madrid all failing to pick up a victory.

Lionel Messi put Barcelona ahead from the penalty spot on 38 minutes after Jose Miramon brought down Nelson Semedo.

However Luis Suarez went off with a calf injury before the break and Levante turned the game on its head inside eight second-half minutes.

Jose Campana converted Jose Luis Morales' pass on the hour and three minutes later Real Madrid loanee Borja Mayoral scored from long-range to make it 2-1.

Then, on 68 minutes, Nemanja Radoja's shot took a deflection off of Sergio Busquets and beat Marc-Andre ter Stegen.

Messi thought he'd pulled a goal back after a one-two with Antoine Griezmann but a video review ruled the Frenchman offside.

"To concede two goals so quickly hurt us. Then the third came and we had a goal ruled out," said Barcelona coach Ernesto Valverde.

"Away from home we are having problems. We suffer. We controlled them in the first half but they turned the game around.

"We have to correct the things that we are doing wrong because teams are punishing us."

Asked if he was considering the possibility of losing his job Valverde said: "Of course not, it's (just) a defeat."

Neither Atletico Madrid nor Sevilla were able to take advantage of the Barcelona loss, playing out a feisty 1-1 draw at the Sanchez Pizjuan.

Franco Vazquez put Sevilla 1-0 up after 28 minutes but Atletico Madrid responded in the second half with Alvaro Morata heading in from Santiago Arias' cross on the hour.

Tomas Vaclik saved Diego Costa's penalty to keep Sevilla on level terms and there was extra time controversy when Jules Kounde appeared to hold the ball between his knees on the line to stop Morata putting it over.

"He handballed it on the line and then retains the ball (between his legs) but the referee did not give it," said Atletico midfielder Koke.

"I always study the penalty takers before games," said Sevilla keeper Vaclik whose spot-kick saved ended up earning his team a point.

Real Madrid were last to play on Saturday but couldn't score past visiting Betis and their on-form keeper Joel Robles in a goalless draw.

He even lost a contact lens, which he was unable to replace, but it didn't stop him making two brilliant late saves from Real Madrid substitute Vinicius Junior.

"We knew this was a chance to go top but the work and attitude was right," Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos lamented.
