Horror Gomes injury leaves Son in tears

Everton midfielder Andre Gomes' serious injury and Tottenham forward Son Heung-min's tears overshadowed their teams' 1-1 draw in the Premier League.

Son was inconsolable after being sent off for his challenge on the Portuguese midfielder, who received treatment on the field for an ankle injury before being taken off the field on a stretcher and taken by ambulance to Aintree Hospital in Liverpool.

Gomes will undergo surgery on Monday after "it was confirmed he had suffered a fracture dislocation to his right ankle," Everton said in a statement late on Sunday.

Toffees manager Marco Silva said Gomes's injury was a tough moment for the team.

"It's more than a football game, this is the most important thing right now. We as a group have to keep togetherness," he said.

Both sets of players appeared distraught at the extent of the injury, which occurred in an incident that also involved Spurs fullback Serge Aurier.

Although it was Son's tackle that brought Gomes down, Ivorian Aurier clattering into the midfielder as he was on his way down.

Referee Martin Atkinson gave Son the red card after initially showing yellow, and the South Korean left the pitch in tears.

"He's disappointed, he's in tears," Tottenham scorer Dele Alli told Sky Sports of Son.

"It's not his fault. He can hardly pick his head up, he's crying that much.

While Son was sent off, Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino clearly saw the effect Gomes's injury had on Aurier and elected to substitute his right-back.

Everton substitute Cenk Tosun scored with a header deep in stoppage time to salvage the draw for the hosts.

Son had earlier capitalised on a mislaid pass from Everton defender Alex Iwobi to set up Alli, who surged past a defender before opening the scoring in the 63rd.

Spurs are 11th and Everton 17th after 11 rounds.

Meanwhile, Leicester City continued to impress with a 2-0 win at Crystal Palace.

Leicester moved to third after Turkey defender Caglar Soyuncu opened the scoring with his first goal for the club in the 57th minute and Jamie Vardy sealed the result in the 88th.

Foxes manager Brendan Rodgers praised his side, saying they were improving with each game.

"The players deserve a huge amount of credit," he said.

"We are not getting carried away but we have made a good start."

Leicester are ahead of Chelsea on goal difference and sit just two points behind Manchester City and eight behind leaders Liverpool.

Palace are ninth.
