Krishna commits future to Phoenix

Roy Krishna has turned down approaches from rival A-League clubs to commit his future to the Wellington Phoenix.

Following the re-signing of skipper Andrew Durante last week, the Fijian flyer has penned a new deal that will keep him tied to the Kiwi club until the end of the 2017-18 season.

Krishna, who scored six goals in 13 games this season for the Phoenix before he was struck down by an ankle injury, said he was flattered by the interest shown in him but had no intention of leaving Wellington.

"Why would I move when I am really happy at the Phoenix?" Krishna said.

"Ernie (Merrick) is a good coach who has improved me as a player.

"I feel comfortable here; I enjoy the training and the players have become real friends as well as teammates.

"Football is my life and to enjoy it you have to be in the right surroundings."

Merrick said he was delighted to have locked down Krishna, one of the A-League's most exciting players on his day.

"He was in fine form towards the end of last season and would have had a terrific season this time in had he not sustained a bad injury," Merrick said.

"Roy is always asking questions because he wanted to grow as a player and it has paid dividends.

"I don't believe he has anywhere near reached his best so we needed to sign him for the long term because he will continue to be a key player in our team."

The Phoenix are out of A-League finals contention but play host to title-hunting Adelaide United on Saturday.
